Gas Free Engineer (GFE)

The mission of Gas Free Engineering is to protect life and U.S. government property. Shipboard GFEs are designated by the Commanding Officer to work in or on confined spaces that may have hazardous environments.
The shipboard Gas Free Engineer is the properly-trained, qualified, and designated individual authorized to decide when all necessary and effective precautions have been taken to eliminate the risk of fire, explosion, exposure to toxic substances, suffocation or asphyxiation before entry into questionable atmospheres or confined spaces.

This area is provided to assist the Gas Free Engineering community with the latest information. More information and tips can be found in the Index.

Fire Marshal (FM)

The ship's Fire Marshal is an assistant to the Engineer Officer and aids the DCA in the training of personnel and the fighting of fires.
The Fire Marshal also works to address day-to-day fire prevention and unsafe practices that could lead to a shipboard casualty.
The Fire Marshal proceeds directly to the casualty scene to direct the efforts of the Flying Squad with the goal of a rapid response to minimize the casualty growth.
If the casualty is beyond their capabilities, the Fire Marshal turns over incident command to the Ship's DC organization and assumes a "big picture" role as directed.
